Gratitude Journal

Have you ever heard the saying, "Complainers are like bad breath, we only notice when it comes out of someone else's mouth"!? Well here's an easy tip to start to move from complaint to gratitude:

Go out and buy yourself a journal ~ one that makes you feel good just to look at it. Perhaps name it your 'Gratitude Log' or another name you like. Kids especially may want to personalize it or decorate it.

Choose a current moment or memory in which you felt joyous and grateful...and write about it. A few words or a few pages, whatever feels good. Now every time you open the book you will see that note and experience some of that joy and gratitude.

You may wish to write in your journal only when feeling thankful, and later reading it to uplift yourself OR you may choose to write in it daily, no matter your mood, to reach for a sense of gratitude and step-by-step improve your overall outlook in key areas of your life (i.e. career, relationships, health). The choice is yours. Most likely your journal will become quite special to you and carry a lovely vibration!

The Gratitude Effect

abundance vs lack....

Which secret garden will you tend? If you are currently in a place where negative inner dialogue or a really difficult situation is trumping your sense of inner peace and abundance, understandably gratitude may not be an emotion you readily feel. So how do you get there from here? Let's first consider two important questions....

Firstly, do you believe that all situations and relationships in your life (even the hard ones) are meant as gifts for the growth of your soul? If not, perhaps you will receive some upliftment from InnerVitality's channelled article on Soul Connections. I realize that's an extremely difficult concept to embrace, but I can firmly and lovingly say that this soul knowingness has allowed me to move from the incredible grief of losing my mom at a young age and the feeling of being unsafe and unprotected as a result of a past car accident...to a place of profound gratitude for the soul lessons I received, for the belief in my inner strength to overcome anything, and for the immense knowing we're all being divinely guided and just where we need to be to truly move forward.

Secondly, do you believe in the power of the mind/emotion to get you to a place of positivity and even gratitude? We can all attest that it feels terrible when someone proclaims the power of positive thinking when we're really not in the mood...we don't want to be preached to, we just want to know how to get out of the place we're in. Law of attraction author Esther Hicks invites us do whatever one thing will bring us a sense of relief...and then the next thing and so on. As we climb the ladder of emotion, any time we feel a sense of relief (even if frustrated/angry if previously feeling despair for instance), we are aligning more with source, more with the vortex of well-being, and more with who we really are.

Perhaps even the happiest and most grateful people in the world could write a list of what's wrong with their life and the world that's just as long as what's right with it...but they certainly aren't focused on lack. Eventually we learn it's our perspective and how we choose to view our life that has everything to do with our sense of abundance, rather than our life experiences themselves.

                     Positive Expectation

If we start to say thank you for even the smallest things we take for granted, our sense of well-being begins to grow and has a marvellous ripple effect...and we find more and more to be grateful for, and we attract even more joyful and positive experiences. Deepak Chopra writes, in "our willingness to give that which we seek, we keep the abundance of the universe circulating in our lives". He gives three tips on how to put the Law of Giving and Receiving in effect in one's life:

1. Bring everyone you encounter a gift ~ perhaps a compliment, flower, or prayer ~ to begin circulating abundance in your life and theirs.
2. Gratefully receive all gifts life offers. Be open to gifts of nature and gifts from others ~ be it in material form, a compliment, or prayer.
3. Commit to keep wealth circulating in your life by giving and receiving life's most precious gifts ~ caring, affection, appreciation and love. Silently wish each person you meet happiness, joy and laughter.

As we begin to feel gratitude in our hearts, it starts to spread warmth and light throughout our cells and body, then radiates positive expectation into the world. When we act (or are around people who are) grateful for our lives and experiences, it's absolutely contagious! We stop complaining. We feel a cascade of greater harmony, divine order, and understanding. We begin to expect miracles and even cultivate a sense of our prayers already having been answered. It is then that we are truly open, truly living, and a vessel for the divine in our own lives and those of others.

Meditation in Compassion
For Ourselves & All Beings

The following metta loving kindness meditation is based on the work of Debbie Shapiro from The BodyMind Workbook:

Sit upright and comfortably, take a deep breath, close your eyes and relax. First bring your attention to your heart and repeat to yourself, 'May I be well, may I be happy, may all things go well for me'. Allow the feeling to grow within...releasing guilt, shame, unworthiness or inability to receive. Let love shine. Repeat as many times as you like, 'May I be well, may I be happy, may all things go well for me'.

In the second stage, direct the loving kindness and compassion you feel towards a dear friend. Repeat several times, 'May they be well, may they be happy, may all things go well for them'. Feel love radiate throughout your being.

Now direct compassion and loving kindness to a neutral person...you may not even personally know them. Hold this individual in your heart and imagine unconditional love flowing towards them. Repeat, 'May they be well, may they be happy, may all things go well for them'. Feel love for the unknown for in reality we are all one.

Next, direct loving kindness and compassion to one who might traditionally be considered your enemy, or one you currently have a conflict with. 'May they be well, may they be happy, may all things go well for them'. Repeat this phrase until you feel your acceptance and love flow to them.

In the last stage, line up these 4 people ~ yourself, your friend, the neutral person, and the enemy. Hold all in your heart until you feel such equal unconditional love that you do not have a preference for one above the other. Now begin to extend compassion outwards to all those in your immediate vicinity and eventually to all beings worldwide, stating 'May all beings be at peace, may I be at peace with all beings'.
